Idea in Action

Schmidt Ocean Institute weaves inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, or IDEA, into our work across all focus areas and teams by building awareness, sharing educational resources, engaging employees, and incorporating our learning into our organizations.

Schmidt Ocean Institute provides support that is deemed critical to building IDEA in ocean science. Here are a few examples:

Caregiver Microgrants

Balancing home responsibilities with work commitments can be a struggle for many caregivers, particularly parents and those with elders at home. When a scientist is invited to perform their research aboard R/V Falkor (too), they must temporarily leave their familial responsibilities. Schmidt Ocean Institute provides up to $500 per investigator and a maximum of $5,000 per expedition to help defray caregiving costs at home. Grantees have used the support to pay for meals, fly in family members to provide childcare, and more.

Regional Microgrants For Technology

We offer grants of up to $5,000 for regional schools in the locations where Falkor (too) is operating. The grants support the ability of the schools to participate in our Divestreams and live Ship-to-Shore Connections. Grant recipients whose applications are approved use the funds to purchase technical equipment, such as a laptop, speakers, and screens, to make community and student participation more accessible.

Ocean Coalition

Since 2020, a coalition of Schmidt entities has collaborated to provide support to organizations working to improve inclusion in marine science through education, early career opportunities, and training. The coalition includes Schmidt Ocean Institute, Schmidt Family Foundation, and two of its grant-giving programs — 11th Hour Racing and Schmidt Marine Technology Partners. Grants are primarily awarded to projects led by and serving people from underrepresented or marginalized communities in the United States. They support programs focused on education, networking, career training, and professional development opportunities.

“I am very grateful to Schmidt Ocean Institute for this initiative. I was able to go to sea with peace of mind knowing that I had this support. I don't know of any institution that has this type of initiative (the caregiver grant), and I have never heard of it on the other international vessels I have worked on. I have only words of gratitude.”
