Ocean science powered by super-computing

A high-performance computer, or HPC, can provide self-service provisioning of hundreds of terabytes of storage memory and a hundred or more central processing units, or cores, to multiple projects. Researchers can model complex physical, biological, and other dynamic processes with unsurpassed resolution in time and space.

About the program

Scientific research generates massive quantities of data, which presents significant hurdles in effectively processing, analyzing, modeling, and using the data. Schmidt Ocean Institute set up a high-performance computing system to address these challenges. Researchers apply to use the system, which enables data storage and processing capabilities to further oceanographic research or technology development.

Fun Fact: Using our shoreside HPC system, researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography developed fully 3-dimensional model simulations for fifteen years of regional-scale ice-ocean interaction in the Arctic.

Upcoming Opportunities

Schmidt Ocean Institute provides access to its HPC to support pioneering ocean research and data science projects that serve research that is aligned with our strategic framework. Schmidt Ocean Institute seeks project ideas that will harness the system's potential to advance its oceanographic research. Successful proposals will demonstrate a cogent plan to maximize the HPC, a team capable of meeting the technical goals, a research question, and a plan to share their knowledge with broad audiences.


We can offer limited logistical support for successful proposals to access and engage the infrastructure. The investigative team must address its own technical and/or software developments and analysis.

To express interest in this opportunity:

  • Send to proposals@schmidtocean.org a proposal for the work to be deployed on the HPC
  • Proposals should be a maximum of two pages, written in English, with body text typed in a single-spaced, 12-point font. Please include this short submission form.

We’ll review proposals and may schedule a call with you to discuss your plans in greater detail. Proposals will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the HPC's computing power is fully utilized.
