Expedition Outreach

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s team of communication experts will work with you to coordinate a detailed outreach plan for your expedition. We will assist with messaging, narrative strategy, managing outreach programs, and more. At sea, highly skilled multimedia correspondents and technicians will document your team’s work and provide technical support for outreach efforts. The shipboard team works closely with the shoreside communications team to share information about your expedition in compelling ways for public audiences worldwide.

Our strategic communication planning and outreach are guided by these three questions:

  • What is novel or different about this science?
  • What technology will be tested or used during this expedition?
  • Why should people care?

Our audiences experience deep-sea science via our live Divestreams, Ship-to-Shore Connections, social media channels, newsletters, and press updates.

We expect scientists to actively participate in outreach, from planning to execution. Before each expedition, our team will host an Outreach Orientation with your science party to introduce each outreach program and our expectations for your team’s involvement. We encourage you to view our archives to understand what to expect before you apply for ship time or begin your expedition.

New Perspectives are Invaluable to our Expeditions

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Artist-at-Sea program harnesses the power of art and science to motivate action for the planet and our shared future through transformative, immersive art experiences. Most expeditions will include an artist selected by our team. The artist is expected to work with the science party throughout the expedition. Many artists and scientists continue to work together after the expedition, as well. In addition, we support a Berth of Opportunity program to engage people from the region where R/V Falkor (too) is operating. This participant is selected by Schmidt Ocean Institute and is also fully integrated into the science and team, depending on their roles and experience. We welcome recommendations from scientists the Artist-at-Sea and Berth of Opportunity programs. The decision is ultimately up to our staff.

Our communication and outreach approach aims to shine a light on your research, bringing science and technology to the public and helping to inspire a connection with the Ocean.
