Virtual field trips to Falkor (too)

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Ship-to-Shore Connection is a free, immersive learning experience for students of all ages in classrooms, lecture halls, aquariums, museums, and community groups. Think of a Ship-to-Shore as a virtual field trip, where learners are taken on a tour of R/V Falkor (too)’s main science deck and directly engage with scientists and crew.

about ship-to-shore connections

Ship-to-Shore Connections take place virtually and last 45 minutes to an hour. They are recommended for ages ten and up and are currently offered in Spanish and English. Depending on the science team, other languages may be available. We introduce the science taking place on the ship, take you on a tour of our lab spaces, hangar, aft deck, and mission control room, and wrap up with a Q&A session. We conduct a maximum of one connection per day during an expedition, three to five days per week. Ship-to-Shore Connections are offered in two formats:

  • Virtual assemblies take place over Zoom Webinar and are suitable for groups larger than 100 people, such as an entire grade level or museum auditorium. We announce virtual assembly opportunities through our newsletter and general announcements mailing list. TheyYou may request a virtual assembly for your group by filling out this Virtual Assembly Request Form.

  • These are connections for smaller groups from ten to 100 people. We prioritize connecting with communities located in the region where Falkor (too) is operating. Fill Out This Form to Request a Small Group Connection.

    • A laptop with a video connection and a projector
    • Good sound system and speaker capabilities
    • Strong internet bandwidth and the ability to connect via Zoom
      • Zoom requires 1.5Mbps, but our experience suggests that speeds below 5Mbps are inadequate. We recommend speeds above 20Mbps.
    • A commitment to prepare the students for the interaction by sharing information about the expedition, which you can find on our website and on Schmidt Ocean Institute’s YouTube channel under Expedition Video Blogs; ROV dives are also streamed live on our Divestream.
