  • Platinum Award from MarCom for the 2024 Impact Report

The Schmidt Ocean Institute 2024 Impact Report – Uncharted Waters invites audiences to journey through the coast of Chile, Antarctica, and the international waters of the Southeast Pacific, showcasing a year of scientific exploration aboard the research vessel Falkor (too). As an interactive digital experience, the report weaves together compelling imagery, videos, and data to highlight groundbreaking discoveries, from mapping uncharted underwater mountains to studying the effects of deep-sea oxygen minimum zones. This digital report also fully translates into Spanish. A companion print postcard, mailed to supporters worldwide, extends the experience beyond the screen, directing readers to the online report while reinforcing the organization’s commitment to sustainability through the use of minimal printed materials. Together, these pieces communicate Schmidt Ocean Institute’s mission to advance oceanographic research, support international collaboration, and bring the depths of our planet’s Ocean to light.

  • Platinum Award for the Colossal Squid Campaign | Media Response

The Colossal Squid Campaign marked a historic first in ocean science communications. In March 2025, Schmidt Ocean Institute captured the first-ever live footage of a colossal squid, a juvenile, during a collaborative expedition. A carefully timed campaign launched in April with a press release, virtual press conference, and coordinated social media rollout. The results were extraordinary, with more than 4,000 international news stories, features in outlets such as National Geographic and Science Friday, and a YouTube video that reached nearly one million views in 48 hours and appeared on YouTube’s Trending page for the first time in the organization’s history. The campaign celebrated a century of scientific discovery and set new benchmarks for global media impact.

  • Platinum Award for the Underwater Oases of Mar del Plata Canyon Expedition | Social Engagement Campaign

The Underwater Oases of Mar del Plata Canyon Expedition social engagement campaign delivered record-breaking results for Schmidt Ocean Institute. During the 21-day Argentinian-led expedition aboard R/V Falkor (too), live “Divestreams” from the seafloor attracted nearly four million viewers and generated over 21 million total views. By engaging audiences in Spanish and Portuguese and leveraging real-time scientific discoveries, the campaign ignited national interest in Argentina’s first high-tech deep-sea exploration, expanded global awareness of ocean science, and set new benchmarks for digital engagement.

  • Gold Award from MarCom for the 2024 Holiday Card

Gold Award from MarCom for the 2024 Holiday Card

Schmidt Ocean Institute's 2024 holiday card unfolds like an elegant night sky—the deep, inky background adorned with shimmering star icons. Each star represents a milestone in a year of scientific discovery aboard R/V Falkor (too) along South America's Pacific coastline. As recipients "click the stars," they are invited on a digital journey through episodic revelations that illuminate oceanographic innovation, remote-sensing triumphs, and unexpected marine wonders.
    The design weaves together:
    * Immersion and discovery: Rather than a static greeting, recipients actively engage with the content—uncovering expedition highlights in a sequence of delightful “constellations” of stories, images, and scientific insights.
    * Narrative cohesion: The star map metaphor evokes navigation—both of the physical ship and of curiosity—linking disparate expedition moments into a coherent, luminous whole.
    * Celebration of collaboration: Each star not only reflects a discovery but also nods to the diverse scientists, engineers, and technologists who made it possible aboard the newly outfitted R/V Falkor (too).
