Our other partnerships include (in alphabetical order):

Training at sea is critical for preparing new generations of early-career ocean professionals. The All-Atlantic Floating University Network was established to strengthen and develop opportunities for students in the Atlantic region and to foster greater exchange, collaboration, and sharing of best practices. The network combines successful at-sea programs in the Atlantic pole-to-pole region to increase student sea-going research and training opportunities.

The BBC is a global producer of natural history programming who use groundbreaking technology and innovation to reveal the extraordinary wonders of nature to audiences worldwide. Since 2023, we’ve partnered with the BBC during expeditions; the footage they capture or request from us will be used for future BBC programming focused on marine wildlife and the deep Ocean.

Our partnership with the Marine Technology Society and IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, or IEEE-OES, focuses on broadening participation in the marine technical and engineering disciplines. As part of this partnership, we offer financial awards to targeted groups. For example, we have supported the winners of student poster competitions at non-North American Oceans conferences, joint activities that engage women in marine science and technology, and special events in the Seattle, Washington, United States area. We have also hosted members on board to sail on Falkor (too), often providing them with their first experience at sea.

Schmidt Ocean Institute has partnered with Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, or MBARI, on many expeditions and collaborative projects. We share a commitment to developing and applying advanced ocean exploration and research technologies. A highlight for us back in 2016 was tank-testing ROV SuBastian at MBARI’s facilities.

Our partnership advances ocean exploration and empowers diverse researchers who are part of the National Geographic Explorer community. We provide opportunities for Explorers from historically underrepresented regions to perform their research on board R/V Falkor (too), a state-of-the-art research platform they traditionally have not had access to.

In 2022, we entered into a partnership with Nekton, a not-for-profit research foundation established to accelerate the scientific exploration and protection of the Ocean. We work collaboratively on expeditions and programs such as Ocean Rising, a joint venture to advance public understanding of the ocean by engaging cultural sectors such as fashion, food, and sports.

Since 2019, Schmidt Ocean Institute has been a partner of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, a collaboration of organizations with a goal to map the global seafloor by 2030, and a flagship program of the United Nations’ Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).Only 6% of the ocean floor was mapped to an adequate resolution when Seabed 2030 launched in 2016; as of 2025, more than 27% of the seafloor has been mapped.

We have a longstanding partnership with NOAA OE that includes hosting U.S. federal scientists on global collaborative research expeditions (who have received funding for their project from NOAA OE); working together to expand mapping and data collection for U.S. marine protected areas; and, since 2020, exploring, characterizing, and mapping the deep Ocean to boost public understanding.

We partnered with the U.S. Department of State to use our resources and expertise to augment government efforts focusing on ocean research and observations, and to strengthen opportunities for early-career scientists. This partnership leverages our work to share scientific observations, research, and capacity-building through the 2025-2029 R/V Falkor (too) Atlantic-focused expeditions.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, or UNESCO-IOC, is the only United Nations body responsible for championing global ocean science and services. Our partnership aims to advance the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
It takes a community to boldly explore our unknown Ocean. Our impact is multiplied by the efforts, knowledge, and resources of the groups we have worked with:

We worked with the Belmont Forum — a group of funding organizations, international science councils, and regional consortia committed to advancing transdisciplinary science — to seek Expressions of Interest for ship time from scientists and researchers working in African waters, where R/V Falkor (too) will be operating from 2027 through 2029.

This hotel in Santa Monica, California, U.S., has a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. Their event space is the perfect setting to spotlight Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nekton’s joint Ocean Rising initiative, which focuses on inspiring a connection with the Ocean. We launched an event series starting in 2024 with an ocean-themed fashion show that continues to grow each year.
Our relationship with Nautilus Magazine helps to connect people with the Ocean and ocean science in exciting and myriad ways – from magazine articles and special Ocean issues that reach millions to shared exhibitions at Art Basel Paris that featured our Artist-at-Sea collection, United Nation-related events, and more.

OBVI is a joint venture between Schmidt Sciences and Schmidt Ocean Institute that supports transformational research about ocean biogeochemistry and its role in climate change. OBVI aims to better understand ocean carbon cycling and ecosystem resilience by developing new models, observations, and research programs.

The Royal Institution is dedicated to creating spaces for scientists and the public to explore science together. In 2024, our Executive Director, Dr. Jyotika Virmani, kicked off this collaboration by delivering a lecture about the science and cutting-edge technology tested on board Falkor and Falkor (too), and hosting the world premiere of our 2023 film Ocean Watch.

We work with TBA-21, a leading international art and advocacy foundation, to showcase and expand the reach of our Artist-at-Sea program. We have co-led exhibits in Venice, Italy, programs at the 2024 U.N. Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona, and public events at the U.N. Ocean Conference in Nice, France in 2025.
Schmidt Ocean Institute is part of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Network of Philanthropies that includes 11th Hour Racing, Schmidt Futures, Schmidt Marine Technology Partners, The 11th Hour Project, The Schmidt Family Foundation, and Remain Nantucket.
