Experience Science at Sea

Our Berth of Opportunity program offers people from the region where R/V Falkor (too) is operating the chance to participate in a research expedition. Participation is open to people with a range of skills and expertise, including but not limited to students, cultural practitioners, storytellers, local resource managers, and Schmidt Ocean Institute partners.

Berth of Opportunities

This program was conceived to provide opportunities for individuals from the region where R/V Falkor (too) is operating to sail aboard the vessel and in return, to bring their experience and knowledge back to their home region. We often target community members with connections to the Ocean who lack experience in offshore research and deep-sea exploration. These include but are not limited to students, community leaders, cultural practitioners, storytellers, marine park managers, policymakers, and local government officials. Schmidt Ocean Institute identifies potential individuals through its partnerships, global networks, and collaborations with investigators, and its global network. (Unsolicited requests will not be considered.) Identified prospects interested in the program provide an application describing their background, the contributions they wish to make during an expedition, and how they will bring their experience back to their community.

"My participation in the Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago expedition provided me with an incredible opportunity to work alongside a diverse, international group of scientists while leading my own research project. As a first-year PhD student, I feel lucky to have had the chance to design and lead my own funded project at this level, and the process has taught me a lot about the decision-making and leadership skills needed to conduct independent research. I also enjoyed having the opportunity to teach others on board about my methodology and practice communicating my research through SOI’s media and outreach efforts."

"Participating in the SUBSEA expedition has been a transformative milestone in my scientific career that goes far beyond the technical experience acquired. While working with advanced oceanographic tools and equipment greatly strengthened my analytical skills, the real impact of this experience was the transformation it brought to my scientific mindset and motivation. Seeing how a large multidisciplinary team works together showed me the true power of collaborative science. Watching researchers from diverse backgrounds seamlessly integrate massive, high-dimensional datasets to understand the ocean was deeply inspiring. Above all, this opportunity taught me that there are no limits to what we can learn and achieve when organizations support research and science."
