Alejandro Balbis

Artist-at-Sea

From sodre.gub.uy

Alejandro Balbis is a musician who is a murguista, singer, choral arranger, and director. A creative soul from whom more than the norm is expected. He has shone brightly in the firmament of Uruguayan music. His presence, his distinctive voice, his way of speaking, of expressing in words the social, cultural, and emotional underpinnings of his songs, distinguish him as one of the beacons that promise to leave a lasting mark on the local cultural heritage. His shifts and new ideas always surprise us. Because his albums change course like a ship that, while knowing its destination, will never reveal the ports it will reach along the way. Some say his voice and style remind them of Don Alfredo. While that might seem sacrilegious, almost comparing him to a national hero, the truth is we don't know how far Alejandro can go. And that's where interpretations become important. Three studio albums released and one live album. Several Graffiti Awards to his name. Even his debut album, "El Gran Pez" (The Big Fish), garnered 5 Graffiti Awards in its first edition—something quite unusual.
Alejandro also boasts several first prizes in Carnival, and his voice is particularly noticeable when he performs with a murga group.
On August 1st, he'll be presenting a new band format, and in addition to playing some of the songs that will be on his fourth album, which is yet to be released, he'll also perform his signature songs. He's one of those artists whose absence is truly felt when he's not performing.

His credits include compositions that left their mark: “El Lugar”, “José Sabía”, “El Gran Pez”, “Canción con vos”, “El Viejo”, among others.
