Asbjørn Haaning Nielsen is an associate professor of environmental engineering within the Urban Water research group at the Department of the Built Environment, Aalborg University, Denmark. His primary research focus is on environmental process engineering of the urban wastewater collection and treatment and pollution related to urban and highway stormwater runoff. Emphasis is on obtaining fundamental knowledge through experimental studies in the laboratory, pilot scale investigations and in the field. A special interest is on heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as microplastics, including developing novel methods for their qualification and quantification in complex matrices.
