Corinne Bassin

Director of Data and Software

Corinne Bassin has worked in private and public sectors and has experience in oceanography, scientific programming, software development, data engineering, and geospatial analytics. She has a B.S. in Math and Applied Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and an M.S. in Interdisciplinary Marine Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara). She is particularly interested in developing and designing data applications that combine scientific integrity with beautiful user experiences.

Before joining Schmidt Ocean Institute, Corinne was contracted by NOAA Fisheries as a developer of various software and analytical tools for scientists. She led the NOAA Fisheries Integrated Toolbox, coordinating a national effort to centralize access to fisheries modeling software. She was part of a grassroots effort to adopt strategies to encourage open-source software development across NOAA Fisheries. She has also worked in the technology sector as a software engineer and data analyst focused on temporal and geospatial data.

As Head of Data Solutions, she leads data strategy to increase the availability and accessibility of Schmidt Ocean Institute’s data and promote open science in the Earth observation community.
