

Executive Director
Dr. Virmani is the first Executive Director of Schmidt Ocean Institute. Prior to this, she was the Executive Director of Planet & Environment at XPRIZE, overseeing global competitions to spur technology innovation for remote, rapid, and high-resolution seafloor mapping; autonomous tracking of underwater biological or chemical signals; rapid rainforest biodiversity assessment; and accurate and robust pH measurements. Before joining XPRIZE, she was the Associate Director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography, a Senior Scientist in the UK Met Office, and the Florida Coastal Ocean Observing System Executive Director.
Amongst other activities, Dr. Virmani is a Trustee of Plymouth Marine Lab, and co-chair of the UN Ocean Decade Technology & Innovation Working Group. She serves on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute Board of Directors, National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Ocean Studies Board, the Oceanology International Catch the Next Wave Committee, and the FathomNet Advisory Council.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, The Explorers Club, and the Marine Technology Society, and a Member of the American Meteorological Society and American Geophysical Union. In 2024, she was named to the Forbes’ 50 Over 50 Innovators List and was recognized in the 2020 and 2023 annual Marine Technology Reporter Top 100 List.
Dr. Virmani has a doctoral degree in Physical Oceanography from the College of Marine Science, University of South Florida, focusing on air-sea Interactions. As a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, she earned an M.S. in Atmospheric Science from SUNY Stony Brook. She also has a B.Sc. in Physics from Imperial College London and is an Associate of the Royal College of Science.
She used to write a humorous and informative tropical storm blog in her 'spare' time with over 475,000 views. She has also produced an award-winning short science fiction film, Hashtag, with her husband, which over 2 million people have seen in 9 countries.
