Glenn is an associate professor in the Department of Oceanography at UH Manoa. Originally from New Zealand, he obtained his PhD from the University of Washington in Seattle, before moving to Hawaii for a post-doctoral position, and was fortunate to get a faculty position before having to leave the Hawaiian Islands. He is a physical oceanographer, who uses a combination of at-sea observations and numerical modeling to study turbulent mixing in the ocean. He has been involved in a number of projects looking at the mixing driven by internal tides around seamounts and in canyons. Internal tides are 3-dimensional waves that propagate through the ocean interior with the same frequency as the surface tides. He is currently the lead on a project to develop a multidisciplinary profiler to study the water column in the deep ocean trenches. Glenn has over 400 days at sea, but this is the first trip focusing on deep sea corals.
