Joan is currently a Master of Science student at James Cook University majoring in marine biology. During her studies, she worked on a project to detect sea cucumbers from drone images using computer vision. Thus, she has developed a keen interest in machine learning, mapping and other cutting-edge technology in the field. At the same time, she joined Tropical Marine Water Quality and Impacts: Microplastics Research group at Australian Institute of Marine Science to optimize the protocol for microplastics extraction from chitin-rich crustaceans.
