Software Engineer - Data
Kaarel Kaspar Räis, a Software Engineer at Schmidt Ocean Institute, brings together expertise in programming and neuroscience with a decade of offshore operational experience. Their hands-on maritime background spans from operating deck cranes to piloting workboats, from commissioning navigation systems to supervising dry-dock periods, complemented by deep technical knowledge working with both Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) across various offshore expeditions.
Their career has combined practical offshore technical operations with software development, bridging the gap between field operations and data systems. After playing a key role in systems integration during the R/V Falkor (too) refit, Kaarel transitioned to a shoreside position as a software engineer in the data division. Their unique combination of programming expertise and neuroscience education has informed their approach to developing robust solutions for complex marine operations.
Kaarel has a special interest in subsea navigation and developing integrated solutions that enhance underwater technology and data collection capabilities. Their experience supporting and operating various vessels and equipment provides valuable insight into creating practical, field-tested software solutions.
