Director of Communications
Kristen Kusek has worked across the science communication landscape for more than 25 years. She has built a career fueled by her passions for science, storytelling, and strategy and believes she has the best job on the planet. Her career has taken her to the top of the world's northernmost active volcano and to the bottom of the sea in the submersible Alvin.
Kristen joined Schmidt Ocean Institute in September of 2024 as Director of Communications, where she serves as a member of the Leadership Team and is responsible for sustaining and building a robust strategic communications portfolio in support of the organization's vision to advance scientific research, technology, and innovative programs that inspire global audiences. She's lucky to work with a top-notch communications team to advance these goals.
Before joining this team, Kristen was the communications lead for the Earth & Biological Sciences Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where she developed its first communication strategy. Previous roles have included director of strategic communications at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science, where she was responsible for all external and internal communications and built a program for underserved youth about coastal resiliency; chief communications and development officer for Earthwatch Institute, the world's largest citizen science nonprofit; head of communications at Harvard's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering; and more. One of her career highlights came early -— leading the education outreach program for the first IMAX film shot on hydrothermal vents, "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea." She's never been able to shake her enthusiasm for deep sea discovery and is humbled and thrilled to join this team.
Kristen has dual master's degrees in marine science and journalism from the University of South Florida and a bachelor's degree in biology and English from Bucknell University. She is based in St. Petersburg, FL.
