Lizt Selene Sibila Osorio Pando is affiliated with the Metagenomic Lab led by Asunción Lago-Lestón at the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE) in Mexico, where she conducts her research focusing on the ecological role of free-living bacterial and archaeal communities in the deep-water region within the Mexican Exclusive Economic Zone of the Gulf of Mexico. She utilizes metagenomic tools like metabarcoding and metagenomic-assembled genomes (MAGs) to study these communities, exploring the potential impact of mesoscale processes, such as eddies from the Loop Current, on community structures in the aphotic zone. Additionally, she investigates communities near the seafloor, mainly due to the Gulf of Mexico's natural hydrocarbon seepage.Lizt earned her B.Sc in Biology at the University of the Andes in Mérida, Venezuela, and completed an M.Sc in Nanosciences at CICESE in Mexico. Currently, She is in the final stages of her Ph.D. in life sciences, specializing in microbiology, at CICESE, Lizt is excited about her second research cruise with Dr. Maria Pachiadaki of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, focusing on characterizing microbial communities in Oxygen Minimum Zones. She eagerly anticipates collaborating with researchers who share her passion and commitment to ocean exploration.
