Montserrat Aldunate is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Concepción and the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO). She is Marine Biologist, Master of Science and Doctor in Oceanography. For her doctoral studies and later for her postdoctoral research Montse awarder a fellowship from Chilean National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), Chile.Montserrat has developed her research in the study of marine microorganisms, phytoplankton and biogeochemical cycles in the oxygen minimum zones. In her doctoral thesis she studied the assimilative metabolisms of carbon and nitrogen in picocyanobacteria that inhabit anoxic marine water in the Easter Tropical North and South Pacific coupling stable isotopes, flow cytometry, and cell-sorting. During this cruise she will participate taking samples and performing incubation experiments to characterize the carbonate chemistry (DIC, TA), carbon fixation rates and autotrophic carbon fixation pathways in the oxygen gradient. She will also collaborate on incubation experiments to value the effect of low oxygen levels on phytoplankton photosynthesis and evaluate the effect of hypoxia on the phytoplankton community.
