
Director of Engineering
Nikolaos Doulis joined Schmidt Ocean Institute in April 2025 as director of engineering. In this role, he oversees the Institute’s Technical operations and innovation, as well as fleet development initiatives that support advanced oceanographic research and scientific discovery.
With more than three decades of maritime leadership experience, Mr. Doulis brings a proven record of operational excellence, vessel management, and newbuild delivery across both the expedition and large-scale cruise sectors. Prior to joining Schmidt Ocean Institute, he served as Senior Vice President of New Buildings Growth initiatives and port operations at Lindblad Expeditions, where he successfully led the completion and delivery of multiple new builds—including National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution—and implemented transformative technical and operational standards that strengthened safety, reliability, and sustainability across the fleet.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Doulis spent 24 years with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL), serving most recently as Fleet Technical Director for Celebrity Cruises and its affiliated brands. In that capacity, he directed global technical operations, start-ups of new cruise ventures, and major refurbishment programs, while instituting environmental, safety, and quality management systems that set new benchmarks within the industry.
At Schmidt Ocean Institute, Mr. Doulis applies his extensive expertise in maritime operations, innovation, and sustainable fleet management to advance the Institute’s mission of catalyzing ocean discovery through technological advancement and global collaboration.
