Port Captain
Patrick Vikström serves as the Port Captain for R/V Falkor (too), a shoreside mariner role supporting the deck and interior department, while also acting as the alternate Designated Person Ashore (DPA) and Company Security Officer (CSO). He has been sailing for over two decades in various capacities, including rating, officer, and Captain.
His journey began with sailing yachts before transitioning to a commercial career following his naval service. His international career started with oil, product, and chemical tankers, carrying cargo globally, including to remote Arctic regions. After more than a decade in the tanker industry, he moved on to the cruise, expedition, and mega yacht sectors. He participated in notable expeditions, including the first commercial cruise through the Northwest Passage, setting a record for the southernmost latitude reached by a passenger vessel, and various other remote expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctica, the South Pacific, and the South Indian Ocean.
After relocating to the US in 2019, he worked as a relief captain for private yachts and a marine consultant, preparing vessels for polar expeditions. In 2022, he encountered Falkor (too) and was impressed by the Schmidt Ocean Institute's mission and the vessel's capabilities in private research. In 2024, he seized the opportunity to contribute to this mission in his current role.
