Chief Scientist
Robert is an associate professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Hawai'i. He received a B.S. in aerospace engineering and mechanics from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Marine Geophysics. His research revolves around using geophysical tools to image the Earth's interior. Specific topics have included mantle dynamics and the evolution of mid-ocean ridge systems; mantle melting and the formation of oceanic crust; the generation of crust in back-arc systems; the flow of the mantle near hot-spots; and tectonic-volcanic interaction during seafloor spreading. He has carried out marine geophysical studies in several locations around the globe and is happy to execute his first experiment in the Hawaiian Islands aboard the R/V Falkor with his team of students from the university.
