Sofya Pesternikova

Multimedia Technician

Sofya Pesternikova holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology with honours from Dalhousie University, Canada. Before joining R/V Falkor (too), she was heavily involved in oceanographic research from shore, completing a thesis that aims to develop affordable and accessible technology to detect Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species in many types of water bodies. This "Pokedex," of sorts, relies on machine learning and microfluidics to detect potentially harmful microbes. As a laboratory technician, she was involved in other research projects, including co-culturing phytoplankton and fungi for waste remediation, investigating the effects of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology on microbes, and understanding seasonal migrational patterns of short-finned pilot whales off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Furthermore, Sofya has worked in the outreach field before, primarily as a Museum Educator at the University of California, Berkeley. She was involved in developing and supporting educational programs for young schoolchildren, and she led immersive marine biology programs for high school students and physics programs for international students.

As a multimedia technician (MMT), she is responsible for maintaining the complex video broadcasting systems on the ship while communicating the expedition science through the Divestreams and Ship-to-Shore Connections. The MMTs also play a role in organizing Schmidt Ocean Institute’s media archive on the ship. She is constantly aiming to find creative ways to bring the fascinating research completed on R/V Falkor (too) to a broader audience. When on shore, she is usually with her camera bag or painting, dancing, and playing outdoor sports.
