Syrmalenia Kotronaki is in her second year of graduate school at Lehigh University at Dr. Santiago Herrera’s lab. She is interested in population genomics and phylogenomics of deep-sea fauna. She earned her B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Crete in 2015, and went on to achieve a M.Sc. in Biological Oceanography at Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel in Germany, studying the population connectivity of abyssal ophiuroid species, while working as a research assistant for the Invasion Ecology group at GEOMAR Helmholtz- Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. Her current work includes population genomics and phylogeography of mesophotic and deep-sea corals. On this cruise, she will be involved in efforts to understand how the phylogenetic diversity of corals may contribute to their production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
