Than S. Kyaw is an undergraduate student at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) double majoring in Microbiology and Pharmacological Chemistry. Beginning in September 2013 he joined Dr. Doug Bartlett’s deep-sea microbiology laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) to investigate microbial diversity and the comparative genomics of pressure-adapted microbes. Deep-sea microbiology combines his passion for the ocean and scientific exploration. His curiosity enables him to be ambitious and adventurous. The expedition to the Mariana Trench will be the biggest adventure he will participate in thus far. His fascination with aquatic-life extends to his personal hobbies as he caters to a privately owned aquarium, which serves as a home to different species of shrimps, snails, fish, plants, and frogs.
