We are excited to partner with Artist-at-Sea Julian Charrière on his exhibition in Venice as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration of our Artist-at-Sea program. Julian sailed on our “Into the Southern Ocean” expedition in 2024-2025.
Spiral Economy. Charrière and Canova
Museo Correr, Venice, Italy
30 April - 20 November, 2026
Presented at the historic Museo Correr in Piazza San Marco during the Venice Biennale 2026, Julian’s exhibition unfolds when Venice becomes an international hub for contemporary art.
Spiral Economy brings together Charrière’s works and Antonio Canova’s marble masterpieces in a dialogue across time- between oceanic and geological time, and the human desire to shape permanence. While Canova, a renowned Italian sculptor, sought to freeze time in marble, Charrière turns to the slower forces that shape our planet: tides, minerals, and deep geological transformation. Even stone, as his works suggest, carries the memory of ancient seas and traces of transformation from the seafloor—a geological journey spanning millions of years.
As Charrière describes it, this is “a dialogue through time… between Canova’s marbles and my investigations into biogeochemical cycles and our relationship to the mineral world.” We celebrate the launch of Julian's exhibition as an invitation to slow down and enter the deep time of the Earth and the sea.
