Seeking Salt Fingers in the Tropical Atlantic
In the northwestern equatorial Atlantic, the water column is highly stratified, with warm, salty water sitting atop cooler, fresher, nutrient-rich waters carried northward from the Antarctic by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). These conditions make the region a hotspot for salt finger mixing, a fine-scale process in which heat and salt are exchanged across density gradients, leading to waters sinking and rising in a beautiful, swirling motion. Scientists suspect that these salt fingers transport essential nutrients for plankton growth, such as nitrate, to the surface, thereby fueling ecosystem productivity and potentially influencing carbon export to deeper waters. Nereus Transformed: from AUV to Che-Vy to Bumble-Bee to ROV.

Nereus underwent a major conversion in the past few days – actually more than one, which proved to be a little ambitious. When you sawNereus last it was a deep diving, plume-sniffing, seafloor mapping and photo-surveying AUV.

Then, it went off in pursuit of Decepticons driving around the streets of Jamaica in Chevy Camaro form.

Smoke and mirrors: a study in light and colo(u)r as Nereus rose back out of the water at the end of early morning tests off the coast of Jamaica this morning. Not a bad first image from our new cameras – but is it Science you ask? It will be!

After being missing for a while it flew back in, in full Autobot form as “Bumblebee“He is the "little brother" of the Autobots, constantly striving to prove himself in the eyes of the other robots. This often causes him to take risks that put him in danger. Although a bit of a smart aleck (I’m not going to say ANYTHING about Casey’s empathy with Nereus here), he is a capable and reliable messenger able to go places that larger Autobots cannot (like the bottom of deep ocean trenches?). He is highly fuel-efficient, has great visual acuity (specially with those new cameras!), and is particularly adaptable to undersea environments."
