Avery Fulford is a PhD student in the MIT–Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Duke University in 2021 and worked at NASA Goddard before entering the Joint Program. Avery is interested in the distribution and dispersal of microorganisms in extreme environments, particularly those involved in the cycling of methane and sulfur in deep-sea seeps and vents. Her focus on this expedition will be to characterize the diversity and function of bacteria and archaea in the subseafloor. Outside of research, she volunteers with a crisis helpline and enjoys spending time outdoors.
