Calvin Swart

I am a PhD student at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with a research focus on the biogeochemical cycling and supply of nitrogen in subtropical gyres. My work investigates the mechanisms of nitrogen supply to surface waters, utilizing dual nitrate isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N and δ¹⁸O), phytoplankton biomass (δ¹⁵N), and total dissolved nitrogen to trace sources, transformations, and export pathways of nitrogen. By integrating isotopic data with co-collected ancillary data, I aim to refine our understanding of nitrogen cycling processes across spatial and temporal gradients, improving constraints on nitrogen budgets and productivity in the subtropical ocean.
