Principal Investigator
David Karl is the Victor and Peggy Brandstrom Pavel Professor of Microbial Oceanography at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. In spring of 1973, Karl participated in his first oceanographic research expedition to the Cariaco Basin aboard the R/V Eastward. In 1988, he co-founded the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program that continues to measure physical, biogeochemical and microbial processes at Station ALOHA on approximately monthly intervals. Karl served Director of the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE), a ten-year NSF sponsored Science and Technology Center. He is now a co-Director for the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE). More information available on the Karl Lab website.
