Megan is a second-year MSc student studying Biology at the University of Victoria (UVic) in Dr. Amanda Bates’ lab and co-supervised by Dr. Cherisse Du Preez with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Her research focuses on identifying functional and bio-diversity patterns on seamount systems using species’ traits. She is interested in how these patterns might shift or change due to climate change threats such as loss of dissolved oxygen, rising ocean temperature, and ocean acidification. Megan has a background terrestrial ecology and holistic restoration through the Ecosystem Management Technician program from Fleming College in Ontario, Canada. She received her B.S. in Marine Biology from UVic where she was introduced to the exciting world of deep-sea research through her honours work which focused on a deep-sea flatfish species (Embassichthys bathybius). Megan has a passion for science communication, the integration of art and science, and projects that incorporate different types of knowledge such as Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Through her research, she hopes to help guide the long-term monitoring, management, and conservation of seamount systems.
