Captain
Captain Pete started his Merchant Navy career as a deck cadet on container ships. A year after qualifying as an officer, he wanted something different because container ship itineraries are like a worldwide bus route. You travel the world but get to the same ports on the same days in the same amount of time, he said. He spent 12 years on scientific research ships, working for the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. Later, he worked offshore on anchor handlers and geotechnical drilling ships for nine years. In 2017, after missing work on research ships, he felt fortunate to get the role of Master on the R/V Falkor and has loved it ever since.
His responsibilities include making sure that each expedition is conducted safely and effectively to meet the Institute’s objectives. He loves working with great people, doing great science, and seeing interesting parts of the world.
When not on board, he lives in a small town in West Wales, where he enjoys spending time with his family. He is often found cycling trails locally and cooking.
