Tihomir Makovec is a senior technical associate and head of diving unit at the Marine Biology Station Piran, National Institute of Biology, Slovenia. He is also a diving instructor, underwater photographer and innovator. In more than 30 years of experience in the marine biology and oceanography field work, he substantially contributed to the research of marine biodiversity, oceanography and other marine research fields using his wide technical knowledge, experience and innovations. He is a co-author of two research patents for underwater sampling equipment and laser detector for enumeration of gelatinous zooplankton. He participate in a few international research expeditions in the Mediterranean Sea. On the cruise he will be responsible for the custom-designed equipment to stain and sample animals from below the vents.
