Open sharing of high-quality oceanographic and atmospheric data is a core principle for Schmidt Ocean Institute — it increases the accuracy of data-driven tools, enhances the value of outcomes from data applications, and increases the speed at which the scientific community gains access to new information.

Overview

Schmidt Ocean Institute employs strategies that make data accessible and readily usable both on the vessel during acquisition and off the vessel, during and after an expedition. This is achieved by establishing a data pipeline that includes sophisticated tools and platforms to improve data access, automated quality assurance and control processes.

Data Strategies

Collecting quality data is at the forefront of our data strategy. Ensuring that the systems and sensors that acquire data are properly installed, maintained, and used is the first step in data acquisition. We have created and built flexible systems allowing for streamlined data collection, storage, and real-time quality assurance. An adaptable and expandable Data Acquisition System aboard R/V Falkor (too) provides the foundation for many of our data initiatives. We leverage open-source technologies, provide feedback, and contribute new features for the larger scientific community whenever possible.

Data is useful when strategies are in place to make it accessible both on and off the vessel. During an expedition, we focus on monitoring the ship’s systems and granting scientists and the public access to real-time datasets. These include informational displays for scientists and technicians, a real-time database that allows for a variety of storage and analysis options, event logging, and streaming data, including imagery and video data for easy viewing. Scientists and the public can access and review sensor data in near-real time on interactive websites during expeditions and review information after expeditions through online applications.

Schmidt Ocean Institute is committed to continually acquiring and disseminating data and information. Anyone can request raw data, including video from ROV SuBastian, whether for science, art, music, or education, under our Creative Commons license. Additionally, we aim to build solutions to make data accessible, interoperable, and reusable. We then share these solutions with the broader scientific community.

Real Time Data

R/V Falkor (too) has several weather stations that monitor atmospheric conditions. It also has an underway flow-through system to monitor the ocean temperature at a depth of three meters while underway.
