Co-Chief Scientist
Raquel Negrete-Aranda earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) School of Engineering in Mexico City. After a short period working for the industry, she reconnected with her life-long science interest and earned a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at CICESE. Her dissertation was on magmatic evolution of volcanic systems. Then Negrete-Aranda held a postdoctoral position at Scripps Institution of Oceanography where she worked with John Sclater on marine heat flow and the geodynamic modeling of the thermal state of the lithosphere of the Baja California Peninsula. Her work has earned her numerous grants and awards from the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT), the MEXUS program, and National Science Foundation (NSF). Currently she holds an academic chair at CICESE endowed for ten years by CONACYT to study the transfer of energy in various geologic processes and possible uses in generating clean, renewable power. Dr. Negrete-Aranda also earned a personal, unrestricted research grant from the Mexican Federal Secretariat of Education (Sistema Nacional de Investigadores)
