Jorge Cortés-Núñez

Professor Emeritus of Biology, Center for Research of Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR), Universidad de Costa Rica

Jorge Cortés is a researcher at the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR) and Professor Emeritus at the School of Biology, University of Costa Rica. He has a B.Sc. in Biology from the Universidad de Costa Rica, a M.Sc. in Geology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and a Ph.D. in marine biology from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. Has over 40 years of experience in the study of the ecology of the main tropical coastal-marine ecosystems: coral reefs, seagrasses and mangroves. He is interested in research on marine biodiversity and recently on the deep regions of Costa Rica. He has published more than 290 scientific and popular works. Another of his interests is the dissemination of science and creating more awareness about the importance of the oceans for Costa Rica and the planet. He retired but has continued with research projects, outreach initiatives, and promulgating the study, protection and conservation of the ocean. In 2022, Jorge was elected as a AAAS Fellow.
