Julie Huber

Dr. Julie Huber is a Senior Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). She studies microbial life in deep-sea crustal ocean habitats. These microbes provide critical ecosystem services such as primary production to sustain deep-sea food webs, nutrient and element recycling, carbon sequestration, and symbiotic relationships with diverse animals. In her research, she unravels the mystery of what microbes live in oceanic crustal environments, how they harness energy from the fluids and rocks that surround them, their activities, evolutionary trajectories, and interactions, and how they contribute to carbon and element cycling that influence the broader ocean system. Julie has led and participated in ocean expeditions around the world using deep submergence technology. She is also passionate about communicating the wonders of science, the ocean, microbes, & more to diverse audiences.
